As a tribute to the upcoming April 25th NFL Draft, The Local Bar has decided to give out awards to honor the finest of the finest 2009 NFL Prospects...
Little School, Big Game Award
Ramses Barden, WR Cal Poly

Ramses Barden (6'6" 224) runs a 4.5 forty and knows how to catch the football. The first person that comes to my mind when watching this man play is Marques Colston. Like Colston, Ramses is from a Division 1AA (yes, I know its now called the FCS) school and has the body of a tight end but the skill set of a wide receiver. Teams will be reluctant to take him early because he does come from a small school, but I believe that team that drafts him is getting a good football player. Ramses is a big target and knows how to use his frame to pick on little defensive backs. Look for Mr. Barden to go somewhere in third round, and yes I think he would be a perfect fit for my NY Giants.
Best Trick Award
Jarron Gilbert, DE San Jose State
WOW! Not to mention the man can play football really well. So when your favorite team announces that they just drafted this young man from San Jose State don't ask yourself who he is but rather log onto the Bar and show off to all your friends this man's hidden talent. Back to football though, Gilbert is a 6'5" 288 defensive end and was the defensive player of the year in the WAC. Gilbert will likely be a second round pick and a good fit for a 3-4 defense.
Thank You For Staying in School Award
Mark Sanchez, QB USC

When Mark Sanchez addresses the media after he is selected as the first rounder in this year draft he should thank Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, and Tim Tebow for that big paycheck he is about to receive. Honestly how could Pete Carroll blame this kid, in two days Sanchez went from being the 5th or 6th quarterback to be taken to the 1st or 2nd signal caller eligible to be drafted.
Robert Gallery Award
Jason Smith, OT Baylor

Never has an offensive tackle been so highly touted in a draft then this young man since the great Iowa savior Robert Gallery. This 6'6" 300 pounder was a complete unknown to many during his college career and now you got everyone and their brother praising him as the most solid pick of the entire draft. I know the Dolphins had great success with Jake Long this year but at least he was recognized as a consensus first team All-American starting for 4 years in a pro style offense at Michigan. Smith on the other hand was a tight end for half his career at Baylor and wasn't even a consensus All-American while playing in a spread offense. Yet Jason Smith has been given the dubious title of the safest pick of the draft by all the so called experts.
And finally, our favorite award here at the Bar....
Best Beer Belly Award
Andre Smith, OL Alabama

Now in all fairness to Mr. Smith, I am sure there are other offensive tackles out their with much bigger midsections, however they are smart enough to keep their shirts on when running the 40 yard dash in front of a crowd of NFL Scouts. Despite Smith's disappearance at the NFL Combine and struggles at his pro day at Alabama, I still firmly believe he will be a definite early first rounder.
